As part of activities marking the upcoming World Wildlife Day, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Dr. Ashatu Kijaji is conducting a field operation at Mkungunero Game Reserve aimed at fitting elephants with GPS tracking collars to monitor their movements.
The objective of the exercise is to track elephant migration patterns and prevent incidents of human-wildlife conflict, particularly damage to communities and agricultural crops. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen wildlife management and enhance coexistence between wildlife and surrounding communities.
This operation also implements directives issued by the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Mwigulu Lameki Nchemba, to control dangerous and destructive wildlife, especially elephants, in affected areas across the country.
Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Dr. Kijaji expressed appreciation to the government under the leadership of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, for continued financial support to the ministry and its institutions. She specifically acknowledged the allocation of funds for the procurement of GPS tracking collars and surveillance aircraft, as well as funding support for the implementation of various conservation projects nationwide.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring sustainable wildlife conservation while safeguarding the livelihoods and safety of Tanzanian communities.
