The International Day for Biological Diversity, observed annually on 22 May, highlights the importance of biodiversity and encourages global action to protect the variety of life on Earth. Biodiversity includes all living organisms—plants, animals, microorganisms—and the ecosystems they form, which are essential for maintaining ecological balance and supporting human well-being.
Countries like Tanzania are rich in biodiversity, hosting diverse ecosystems such as forests, savannahs, wetlands, and marine environments. These ecosystems provide vital services including food security, climate regulation, and natural resources that support livelihoods and sustainable development.
The Tanzania Centre for Research Cooperation recognizes this important day by promoting research, collaboration, and awareness aimed at conserving biodiversity. Through scientific studies, partnerships, and knowledge sharing, CRC supports initiatives that protect ecosystems and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources for future generations.
